The Department is implementing
post graduate teaching programme, short-term training courses for upgradation
of skills of mid-career scientists and faculty engaged in teaching and R&D,
industrial training of students fellowship for doctoral and post-doctoral
research training in frontier areas of life sciences. The Department is
generating critical mass of trained and skilled manpower required for overall
development of Biotechnology in the country.
DBT supported teaching programmes
have consistently performed well at national level competitive exams conducted
by CSIR, UGC, DBT, and ICMR for doctoral fellowships. During the year 2015-16,
six new PG proposals were processed for peer review and considered by DBTHRD Task
Force. One time support was provided to M.Sc. Biotechnology teaching programme
at Manipur University, Imphal and proposal for starting M.Tech. Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology at Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai is under
consideration for support.
Star
College Scheme is a unique scheme initiated by the Department with an aim to
nurture excellence in science education at Under Graduate level. The main
objective was to strengthen the under-graduate science departments by providing
academic and physical infrastructure to the colleges, imparting hands-on
training to UG students, promoting faculty improvement programme, networking
with neighbouring kind in bringing the foldscope to the masses and Star college
scheme was chosen to be the first starting place to explore a pilot programme to
bring Foldscope to the scientific community of teachers, ecologists and
explorers based in India. Under
star college program:
- Ninety-two colleges supported
- Ten colleges accorded star
status
More than 1600 personnel trained under UG, PG training courses
More than 2000 candidates provided industrial
training under Biotech Industrial Training Programme
The post graduate teaching programmes
were initiated by DBT in 1985 in six universities in close collaboration with
University Grants Commission, ICAR and Department of Ocean Development. These
programmes were conceived as collaborative, inter-departmental, inter
institutional programme and initiated on the basis of core strength in the area
in terms of faculty expertise, infrastructural facilities, R&D grants on
competitive funding basis, nearby institutions engaged in biotechnology
R&D. These programmes played a catalytic role and inspired other institutes
to initiate these programme on their own. Liberal grants were provided for
establishment of specialised laboratory infrastructure, equipment, recurring
grants for consumables, studentship, books and journals, travel, visiting
faculty, contingency, thesis grant etc. India is a vast country and keeping in
mind the demand for trained manpower, these programmes have been expanded in
general biotechnology as well as area specific expansion in neuroscience, human
genetics, medical, agricultural, marine, veterinary and industrial
biotechnology to cover 70 universities.
